Erased: Chapter 34

Chapter 34- Love and Picket Signs

Wood- I've just caught up to her.  It's the way they planned it.  Ladies first.  We entered the chapel together, but in separate aisles.  We exited down the middle aisle but all in single file.  She has her picket sign.  I can see the thin cut of wood attached to a rather large cut of white paper as I latch on to her.  I have my sign too, and we're checking each other's message out.  Mine is not as large.  It's some powerful mind.  A beautiful re-creation.  A salute, and with no missed opportunities.  All the messages are good, and it's a good cause for conversation as we pilgrimage from the church two blocks up to the reception hall.  Everyone's walking, Bride and Groom and all, and they're leading the way.  It's a pretty wide side walk, and there are kids cutting through the line... well, it's no longer a line, it's a movement, and it's loud and lively.  There are photographers everywhere set to capture us in our humanity.  It's not a brisk walk, but a slow and thoughtful one.  My sign says "Love Protects" and hers "Love Never Fails".  It's a pretty fine match.  When we take the short flight of stairs into the hall, there are several helpers stationed to collect our signs.  Just like they were handed to us at the door of the church, they're taken back at this door, but not until we get some really cool pictures.  I'm tempted to keep my sign, but she knows.  It's hard to tell the party from the people, we're all a sea of White, Champagne, and Gold except the hats we're wearing and the pink roses in the ladies' hair.  It's a pretty sharp party.  All the men in white pants, champagne colored jackets, gold ties, and with navy handkerchiefs and Captain's hats.  Derek's in all white with a gold tie.  My lady, she's a beautiful contrast of deep chocolate tones draped in champagne.  Her locks are up and falling to one side.  She all smiles.  All of us are filled with joy and amazement.  We've been waiting on them, and they knew it all to well to disappoint us with anything less than spectacular.  And of course a few surprises.  I hadn't seen it coming.  They weren't at the rehearsals, but there they were, Tayeton and two faces I didn't recognize standing in our line.

As most of the guest clear the lobby, we're all left behind to introduce ourselves.  I can't let go of the fact that Tayeton has become somewhat of a permanent fixture in our life, and rather than fight it, I just embrace it.  The two brides are dressed to perfection.  I can't tell you all of what they're wearing, it's not my thing, but the grooms can hardly take their eyes off them.  Even with all the splendor, it's less of a wedding and more of a marriage.  Their eyes all convey that.  It was something to see though... two brides coming down that middle aisle, hand in hand; one veil and one gold crown.  And the vows... all tears, all heart, and all poetry.

We let the ladies get touched up before we take a few more pictures, and we enter to a mighty reception.  The guests are more than happy campers, and some are still finishing off whatever they were eating.  I can see they got the papers, and a few are still reading through them when we all raise our clasped hands in the air and then sit.  The party is long, and the brides remain in their dresses the whole time.  So do the men in their hats.  In fact the only time a single hat came off was for the Wells' vows.

On the ride back home we can't stop talking about all the highlights, and I reminded of the night we were married.  It hasn't been that long, but we've completed many chapters... all of them together, and that's most of my pride. Now I know its good to go through the fire, because I'm sure we can face just about anything.

Introduction to Freeborn

The Decks and the Road Book 1- Freeborn Introduction “You have not seen your life, until you’ve seen a circle.” In life we take the hands we are dealt, and hit the road.  Sometimes the deck makes us a slave, and other times, the road wears us down.  Then, every now and again we get a glimpse of the Freeborn ; the beauty that is born at the round-about.  It’s a fragile beauty; a beauty that can be easily seen but not understood.  It’s the beauty you hope will be with you forever.  But, too bad; it was born free.  It comes, it harnesses the wind, it creates a line in the sky, and then, it’s gone.  The freeborn is not for the aspirational.  It’s useless to aspire to.  It’s not up to us who breathe, but it’s decided by the one who gives breath.  The generations could not purge itself to exist this way; nor could traditions.  It’s the resting of a hand—the touch of destiny; and boy is it sure to be victimized.  Yet, nev...

Freeborn: Chapters 1-3

The Decks and the Road book 1- Freeborn Chapter 1 Nathan - My father was a serious man.  He never appeared to fully relax.  His eyes always seemed to be following the movements, actions, and even the thoughts of the people around him.  I got the feeling that he hadn’t achieved all that he’d thought of achieving in his life.  Yet, he stood so tall.  He held our family up with a tight grip, and my brother and I were never really more than an arm’s length away.  In the evenings, we sat around the table waiting for him to pour out his wisdom.  My mother never sat around though.  Perhaps she’d already heard all he had to say.  I remembered a lot of what he said, but I hadn’t quite found the opportunity to share any of it.  My family looked somewhat like ours did back then, but there were secrets that seemed to keep us from gathering.  I mostly just kept my head down, and saw to it that we had everything we needed.  I ha...
