Chapter 36- Life At the Present Moment

Mr. Wells- I have an office again.  The first to go up is the front page story from the newspaper that was printed on our wedding story.  It was a delightful gift from Tayeton, and all the wedding guests thought so too.  Until now it's been wrapped up and tucked away.  I couldn't have predicted any of this... not the collaborative problem, the solution, or the results.  I've heard of being in the right place at the right time, and I had been; and apparently four times in the last seven months.  He just happened to mention the matter.  I was prepared to listen, and then I offered to take a look.  It's the increasingly faithful bird's eye view that led me here.  I'm still trying to get it straight; whether I started over, or over restarted me.   I do know that this is no remodel.  There's no sight of what was, and I'm beginning to like it. The second to go up is the frame with the cover of The Wells Journals.  It took some convincing, but I'm happy about it now.  I suppose it can do some good in keeping some heads on straight.  That's the biggest of all balancing acts in life.

A lot of folks are in and out; dropping off their welcomes and congrats.  Vance dropped in first of course, and I can still feel his Pat's on the back vibrating while I fill the room with the few what nots I have.  After the inflow recedes, I stop to steady my head.  It's the notion of whether or not I'm in the clear.  I think about it a while, and I'm awakened to the Fisher net and the long arm of the Vance Shepherd.  It's not an obvious one, either one, but now that I'm standing still I can sense them.  They're not string pullers.  It's much more honest their grasp, and a lot more gentle, but it's there.

I would have been more than satisfied with joining the engineering team, but the check spoke to the value.  It wasn't the largest check I'd seen.  I had gotten an all cash offer on my house almost the moment I'd put it on the market.  I'd done it just after the fire, and it was the right move.  I didn't think it would come so soon, but if I'd waited any longer.... well, it's behind me now.  Now the focus is getting the new Shepherd Engine ready for its racing career.  It's the third year in a row he's submitted it, and this time I think we got something.  It was a list of small changes, and the biggest of those, a small shift in the lobe center.

I didn't see it as a major contribution, but all the guys said different.  The check and the office also said different, but the fact that no one saw robbery, let me know I wasn't out of place.  Nor was the memory of my father on this day.  I could bet he'd say... "You mean to tell me, you were paying attention after all?" and my life would say yes.  And not just this part, but all of it at the present moment.

Introduction to Freeborn

The Decks and the Road Book 1- Freeborn Introduction “You have not seen your life, until you’ve seen a circle.” In life we take the hands we are dealt, and hit the road.  Sometimes the deck makes us a slave, and other times, the road wears us down.  Then, every now and again we get a glimpse of the Freeborn ; the beauty that is born at the round-about.  It’s a fragile beauty; a beauty that can be easily seen but not understood.  It’s the beauty you hope will be with you forever.  But, too bad; it was born free.  It comes, it harnesses the wind, it creates a line in the sky, and then, it’s gone.  The freeborn is not for the aspirational.  It’s useless to aspire to.  It’s not up to us who breathe, but it’s decided by the one who gives breath.  The generations could not purge itself to exist this way; nor could traditions.  It’s the resting of a hand—the touch of destiny; and boy is it sure to be victimized.  Yet, nev...
